old propane tanks

I have two 20 pound propane tanks which have a mfg date of 1995, both tanks have the new style valve so I would believe they have been re-certified but I don't know where the re-certification date would be located. It seems that the local gas stations that sell propane don't check the dates when refilling and it causes me some concern. Can anyone tell me where the re-certification date can be found ?.

  • Traded mine (old style valve too) at Blue Rhino stations at discount home store - and yes, I told that to the clerk - they said that would be ok.
  • Most places never look for a re-certification date of the tank has an OPD valve.
BTW, refer them as DOT cylinders or bottles to get accurate info.
  • Not necessarily, I have tanks with new style valves that are beyond the 13 years (or whatever that time is). Propane dealer said to take them to an exchange place rather than recertify.
  • The new date would be scribed in the upper rim where the manufacture date is.
