Onan 4kw issue

New RV owner here, just purchased a 97 Coachman Leprechaun with a 4kw Onan genny, generator starts and runs fine, but the 30A breaker on the genny stays kicked. I have all the breakers in the rv turned off and when I turn the 30A on it kicks within 5 secs. Any help would be much appreciated
  • Did some digging and chased the wiring across the chassis where it comes up through the floor on the opposite side of the rv, it ends there, somebody pulled it apart and there’s a switch that’s completely unwired. Any ideas or a schematic? No other loose wires beyond the four coming from the generator

Why would you state this? Its not true. But, just want to know why you would think it is. Doug

Doug, what's really scary is they are probably sober when they make those comments.

  • Running the 120 volts from genset to transfer switch and running shore power cord to same location is more cost effective for manufacturer.

  • I would start at the first junction box from the genset. I would not be surprised if you find a half melted wire nut on the hot lead.
  • I've had a transfer "switch" burn up; converted to the manual plug method. But mine shorted out when using shore power too.

I think the other likely guess is that the breaker itself has failed.
They "live" in a pretty harsh environment....heat and vibration.
  • Thanks for the very quick replies, I’m gonna dig in today and see what I can find
  • The genset power would pass through the transfer switch if equipped.
Some 30 amp rigs require the shore power cord to be plugged into a genset 30 amp receptacle.
    Which do you have?

If equipped with automatic transfer switch, locate it and check for damaged components.
If genset receptacle, unplug from receptacle and then check
  • Look for a short between the connection after the breaker to the "house" panel.
