I had a similar problem and found I could keep it running (rough) by holding the choke closed. After doing that for a while it started running okay. I guess the varnish in the carb got cleaned out.
Other folks have suggested running a hose from the input side of the fuel filter to a container of gasoline with Seafoam mixed in and running it to clean the carb out.
I think the container may need to be elevated to the same height as the filter so the pump can pick it up.
