Onan 5000 won't start (ignition problems?)

Help, Our Onan 5000 generator run out of gas last fall and hadn't been cranked since then, now it won't run. We just bought the RV last year and the genny has run great. It will only spark once on plug when the starter button is released. It has plenty of fuel and oil level is good, took the fuel line off and there is fuel coming out. Grounded the oil pressure switch to see if it would run and it wouldn't. My husband thinks it is something to do with the ignition or starter relay because one of the wires on it doesn't have fire to it when trying to crank, still trying to figure out where it is going to. I have been reading the forums and relaying the info to him all day. My husband is a very good mechanic but we can't figure this out, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also I just remembered my husband said the slip rings weren't showing any copper they are are metal looking, are they worn out?
  • I found that my ground wire had rusted away from its connection point. Good to freshen the connection as rjxj advised.
  • You may have a poor connection at one of the control boards. Find any control boards and at least remove and reinstall the connectors. This will give them a new "bite" and freshen the connection. Pay attention for any corroded terminals.
