The 22r engine in your 1984 Toyota had, titanium bearings in it. That's why it got to 400k miles.
A friend of mine a few years ago was talking to an engineer from Toyota (over from Japan) and when they originally built the 22r, they were worried about the bearings failing prematurely (there was some speculation regarding the main bearings and they opted to make them out of Titanium in lieu of good old fashioned steel bearings).
One of those random tidbits as to why things last so long...
