Onan fuel filter

Thanks again Cloud, we do have a slight different config. Mine has 2- 10 plug vertical connectors under the air filter, the solinod is in the middle and the board is over to the left on the bottom and another loom over it. The onan shell sits to low and close to the cabinet to access the torx screws in the front. Just a poor design all around, and then really shoehorned in to small of a cabinet for proper maintenance. Think I'm going to give up without breaking anything as it runs OK, just wanted to do some PM.

There is another possible route for changing the fuel filter. My Onan is a Spec K, so your Spec G may be somewhat different.

If you can get at the clamp on the fuel hose and remove the hose from the barb on the end of the filter, the rest isn't too difficult. The fuel pump and filter are located under and behind the control board. In the picture below, the control board is the item with the four fins on top.

Before doing anything else, disconnect shore power and the ground cables from the house and chassis batteries.

Disconnect the heavy red wire from the starter solenoid (top left in the picture). I think I also had to remove the solenoid to have enough room to remove the control board. The control board is held in place by the two #30 Torx screws visible at the bottom of the picture below the Caution label. I don't recall whether I had to disconnect the multi-wire connector from the control board.



Once the control board is out of the way, you will have access to the fuel pump and the attached filter. The fuel pump has two feet and is held in place by one #30 Torx screw through a foot. The other foot goes into a slot in the bottom of the case.

This is why I refuse to work on the KY and KV units. Very hard to explain to a customer. Why that 10 minute job is going to take two hours.

When I first got the trailer and saw where the genny fuel filter was I crawled under the trailer, cut the gas hose and put in an in-line see-through filter. I never did try to figure out how to replace the original...

Thanks Cloudriver, good explanation. However there is only about 1.5" between the edge of the Onan and the cabinet it sits in. Maybe if I remove the 4 bolts holding it down and shifting the tail pipe, there might be enought slack in all the wires to pry it to the right enought to get my arm back there. Looks like the only option. Thanks again.
