Onan generator shorted (110 side)

Hello everyone.

My 1978 Pace Arrow developed an issue. When the shore cord is pugged in to power it will trip the residential house breaker immediately.

I traced it to the generator, which is an Onan 6.5 gas unit. The Hot and the Ground has full continuity! This can't be right. Has anyone heard of this issue?

I'm thinking the voltage regulator is blown or there is a problem in the generator itself.

  • On that age coach, I am ASSUMING that it is 30 amp, not 50.

Wiring to the ATS is very simple:

Three wires in from shore power: hot, neutral and ground.

Three wires in from generator: hot, neutral and ground.

Three wire out to coach 120 VAC breaker box: hot, neutral and ground.

    How did you wire it?

BTW, if 50 amp, add another hot to each (shore, generator and out to breaker box).
  • Put the wiring back the way it was and then try it. Also on some RVs the generator does not power up everything to much load.
  • It has an ATS. I rewired it because only half of the breakers were hot when plugged in to shore power. Did I damage my generator?
  • My rig is an 88 and there is no switch for connecting to the genset. There is an outlet in the power compartment that is wired to the genset. How do you connect genset power to your rig?
  • Do you have an ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) or do you have to manually change from shore power to generator power?

Both sources should NEVER be used at the same time. So, even if the generator is shorted, shore power should never reach it.
