Check the wire wound resister in the start circuit. On startup it bypasses the resister so it has a higher start voltage. If the resister goes bad the circuit goes open when you release the start button. You can check it for continuity with a vom.
Forget tha above. I finished reading your post and that cant be your problem but i thought i would leave the info in case someone searches and has the problem where it only runs while holding in the start button.
