onan microquiet 4000

I have a 2007 Coachman Freelander and have had generator problems since year 2 when the shop said it was gummed up and replaced the carb, (I am not mechanical at all). All the problems since have been keeping it running. The problem now is it will run but shut off with a load on it, the other day I took it to the shop and they tried to adjust it unsucsesfully, it runs but when a load is put on it, it shuts off, they tried to tweek it up but then it would overrun and shut off, they "think" it needs a governor, I have had nothing but problems with it with the same problem a couple years ago and they played with if for a while that time to find a tight median that it worked in.

Please help with advice as it needs to go get fixed next week?
  • You may as well try to work on it your self you may do better than the tech. I would run it it no load and make sure the throttle plate is not touching the idle stop screw if its touching the screw it will have a hard time responding to a load . Look on page 8-10 you'll need a hz on your multimeter to test it. You can also look to see if idle stop screw is touching while its running.

  • If your not mechanically inclined then I agree with Bruce - find another shop. Not sure what's available in your area - last time I brought my Onan in for adjustment I used a truck outfit as trucks use generators to power the refrigeration units on perishable products.
  • All I can offer is - go find another shop. It sounds like the one you've been using is just hacking at the problem instead of actually fixing it.
