You can have only one source of 120v at a time or wreck your rig with 220v frying your goodies. To stop that, rigs with installed gens have automatic Transfer Switches.
Installed inverters also have internal transfer switches and so they "pass through" shore power or gen 120v on their 120v side when it is there instead of making their own.
With the shore power cable plugged into the inverter trick, YOU are the transfer switch. The cable can only be plugged into one place at a time. Pedestal , portable generator, inverter.
