In theory 12 volt AGMs should be slightly better because of the internal connections between the six cells vs the external link on six volt jars. Also for the same size jar the plates have to be thinner. That means, for the same amp-hour capacity there is double the plate area exposed to acid. Whether that makes much difference--well someone would have to do real life testing.
If the OP went to 12 volt agm chemistry he could increase his overall capacity by 1/5 by still using the OEM battery compartment.
He could also get "sexy" and have a 48 volt or 24 volt bank to power a large inverter more efficiently, but that opens a whole other can of beans.
I still lust after six two volt cells in the 800 amp-hour range. If they were AGM I could do it--but my beer budget gets in the way.
