Glad you didn't try to stop the spinning bracket!
Some awning makes/models have holes in the end cap and the shaft that let you pin it so it can't unwind. But we're past that... Also, some let you slide the fabric without removing an end cap. Some installers/DIYs make a cutout in the rear end cap (without the latch) to allow that. But we're past that...
There are manufacturer instructions how many turns to take and in which direction to tension the springs. The longer (front to rear) the awning the more turns.
I've been involved in two of these projects. One was a fabric repair on A&E and I was able to immobilize it with pins. Never had to undo the caps. The other was a front spring on a neighbor's Carefree. One of us held the tube to keep it from turning while the other tensioned the spring. We used the entire arm as a lever so we didn't have to deal with a bracket/visegrip situation. If you've got a good grip on the tube, the twist isn't all that forceful with the leverage of the arm.
