Sounds like you forgot to put the pins in the tube first. Been there and done that, don't worry all is not lost. Vice grips are almost a necessity at this stage, but first you will have to put an 1/8th inch x 3" pin through the tube (make sure it cannot fall out). I learned by trial and error but I found you will need about 14 complete turns on the spring before you put in the safety pin. Probably will need someone to give you a hand. Patience is necessary but success will feel good. Good Luck!
