This story goes to show what self help and that all important fool proof help you-tube and the Internet gives people.
Here is how a PROFESSIONAL does it.
1. You REMOVE the awning arms and all sliding it out of the awning rail.
2. Lay it on the ground. using 2 people, lift the arms up about 1 foot off the ground and release the Lock release and let the awning tube spin free. That removes the tension.
3. Take BOTH arms off at the arm mount bolt on each end.
4. REMOVE BOTH torsion springs by drilling out the rivets (Dometic/A&E) or the Screws (Carefree) slide the springs out
5. With the awning tube on the ground and then roll out the tube to extend the fabric. Then pull the tube out of the awning fabric ropes. Using the old fabric on the ground to protect the new fabric, you unroll the new fabric on top the old and then slide the tube down the new fabric.
6. You then reinstall the Torsion springs and rivet or screw
7. ROLL the awning fabric up over the tube and then reinstall the ARMS.
8. Then put the release tab in ROLL DOWN position. Tape the fabric with electrical tape at about 4 points to keep the fabric edge from flopping.
9. You then roll the COMPLETE tube Inward about 10 to 12 times. THIS puts the correct tension on BOTH Torsion springs. Since you have it in roll down (extend) lock position the awning will not spring and unfurl.
10. Then you remove the electrical tape that holds the fabric and slide the awning back ON the RV and then fasten the BOTTOM feet when it is in position. It DOES take 3 people to remove and install but only for a few minutes.
11. Last, it took me longer to write this than it takes me and my shop to do the actual job. Not really, but the average for a professional is about 45 minutes.
12. THERE IS NO REAL SAFE SUBSTITUTE TO HAVING 2 EXTRA HELPERS FOR THOSE FEW MINUTES YOU NEED THEM TO REMOVE AND INSTALL ON THE RV.
13. There are those You-Tube and other ways to do it, but what I outlined is the best easiest way to do it. Doug
