When We bought Our present unit it had a recently replaced Awning along with some spare parts . I was not very happy with the way the thing rewound so decided that in addition to a reposition of the Fabric ,it also required more tension .
I found the safest and easiest solution for Me was to extend the awning fully. I them tied both ends to a pair of trees that happened to be nearby with some decent rope .Don't use the rafters.
I then released the bottom of the Awning arms ,one at a time from the side of the rig. It is relatively easy to release the sliding parts, without undoing any bolts allowing the now five foot or so main Arm to be rotated around the Roller in the direction indicated to tighten up the spring safely.
Slide the various pieces back together and re clip it to the bottom plate.
This is a whole lot safer than trying to hold that thing together with a Vicegrip!
