We had to install new springs in our large awning. It's a carefree and it came with the instruction telling us how many turns to do at each end and in which direction. We had a hole where we could install a pin/nail to keep it wound on the tension end while we wound the other. We left the arms on and rested the awning tube on the top of the golf cart so I wouldn't have to hold it the entire time. I'll bet if you research your brand/style of awning you should be able to find instructions or video's showing how to do it. Just be careful!
