Guess what!? I took a flash light, and looked down the 17 foot shipping tube that the fabric came in. Crumpled up at the end was a set of instructions that included how to replace the fabric, replace and wind the torsion bars. It even had a couple of correctly sized double headed nails to pin the springs. I wish I'd seen these when I opened the tube.
If any of you are ever in this predicament, send me a private message and I can forward the instructions to you. The number of windings vary with the type of torsion springs you have and the size of your awning. In the end, I purchased a nicer set of vice grip pliers and had no issues at all winding the springs. For my 16 foot awning with the lower tension torsion bars, the windings are 10 turns with the fabric out, or 16 with the fabric wound up.
So, the new rivets are installed, the springs are wound and pinned, and we're just waiting on the wind to die down to reinstall it on the FW. I can't thank you all enough for all the tips and tricks. I think every one of them would have worked and it just goes to show you that there are lots of ways to get a job done, and this forum has some really smart people on it.
