I can also remain connected to it on most of my 3.4-acre property which is great when I'm doing yard work. You need to run CAT5/6 cable to it and plug it into your router. It's PoE so it gets its power from a power injector that you install inline with the Ethernet cable. You don't *have* hook it up to your router - it will work as a repeater - but since you have to run Ethernet cable to it anyway for power, you might as well plug it into your router.
