There is not always a simple black and white comparison of serial vs parallel panels and shade. Serial panels with bypass diodes can significantly outperform parallel panels with shaded panels. The following graph shows the output for 3 serial panels in leafy shade. Up to 12:58 one panel is producting power due to the shade. Then up to 1:48 as the shadows start to clear the other two panels you can clearly see the ratcheting up of power as the panel areas with bypass diodes start to receive full sun. The step up of array voltage (red graph) is clearly evident along with the MPPT adaptation of output power (blue graph) due to the increased array voltage.
