Serial will produce more as long as the bypass diodes conduct. If the diodes do not conduct then series is significantly worse off.
It all depends on the type of shade. If the shade is produced by an object close to the panel then the diode will conduct. On the other hand if shade is produced by a tree farther away, covering an entire panel the diodes may not conduct. Series will have a significant decrease in power. You can test this scenario by tilting one panel 45 degrees away from the sun.
