I have a PD9260 and 220 watts of solar with a $15 PWM controller. I check and bring up the water every now and then. I could get by only doing it once a year, but why not check regularly and make sure nothing is going wrong. My no-name GC's are now near 8 years old, and still doing fine.
I do bypass the solar controller occasionally to give the batteries a good equalization.
I certainly like my PD; but there are many other good multistage converters around.
