Yeah, use the trailerlife portal.
Thank you, I'm trying this through the trailerlife portal. Here's what I was trying to post originally (as a test):
Agreed. Battery bank acceptance rate issues would apply.
Help me understand this comment. As you drive the voltage up won't the current increase? Trojan recommends 14.8 VDC daily charging. Won't the charge rate increase when charged at 14.6 vs the default PD 14.4 boost rate? With 460 AH, I could go to 92 amps and still stay below 20percent (C/5), which is what Trojan tech support suggested as the max rate.
And as I learned today, and posted in another thread, running the PD off a synchronous genset really trims it's output. So far, I see it running 60% of rated.
I've looked at the PD design and understand why it runs best on a decent 120VAC waveform. Its design particularly needs the top of the AC output waveform.
The newer inverter type gens hold a fairly constant output and have a decent wave shape. I understand why they would work well. Slightly older gens use a rotating field with a voltage regulator that varies the field current on the rotor windings to vary the DC excitation current. They vary in how they work, but most chop the field current and I can see that it's quite possible they won't like a poor PF load like the PD.
However the oldest gens, like my Onan CCK do not have a voltage regulator. They rely on engine speed alone. When turning at the correct speed, they produce the correct voltage. I'm hoping it will produce a better waveform than the designs, like the Onan NHD, NHE etc. gens that use a chopping VR for voltage control.
Do you know if any tests have been done on the compatibility of these older gens and the PD? I bought a DC current clamp meter so I can do some tests. I'll also comment that I'm hoping that if the charge rate is lower than I expect/want, modifying the boost output voltage from 14.4 to 14.6 or will bring the output current back up, even if there is a slight decrease due to the generator waveform.
End ...
This seemed to work much better. I'd almost decided to give up. I do appreciate the comments. There seem to be many knowledgeable people here. It's nice to be able to tap into that bank of knowledge.
