I'll definitely look at it. I agree it could be too sensitive and it was the only obvious candidate. As a possible culprit, it should be pretty easy to identify. The voltage at CLADJ should remain constant. If it doesn't, it's too sensitive.
Lifting the diode would remove the short circuit protection, but it's based upon detecting a low duty cycle. It shouldn't be too hard to add back short circuit protection by detecting low output voltage and low duty cycle indicating high current into a very low resistance/short circuit load.
