Given the 1V line drop, most likely the IQ4 was functioning at the time of the test.
Your analogy of hare and tortoise is a stretch. Yea, the tortoise will win if you cut off the front legs of the hare.
You don't really need the IQ4 to get higher voltages than 13.4V. One can purchase a plug-in that sets the voltage higher than base line. You would need to manually un-plug it to drop voltage.

Isn't it also the IQ4 that pushes the unit to 14.6V? Without it, even using the manual switch, would it not be limited to 14.2?
Well you don't really have to "purchase" it ...It comes free with your converter.
Are you positive that the IQ4 is standard on all base DLS models? Or... any.. for that matter?
He is refering to the little jumper wire with the phone plug end that keeps the converter in 14.2v for as long as you like. Go to their site and read all about it.
IOTA At the time I bought mine Randy was not selling the units with the built in IQ4, Just the standard unit with the IQ4 pendant. He told me that most of his customers prefered the pendant so they could watch what was going on without having to actually see the converter. Turned out to be a good idea.
