Is the Onan one of those MSW types? Bad for PDs. Wayne has scoped that in his post here:

I saw that post a while back - even before I selected the PD. My Onan is not an inverter gen of any type - MSW or PSW. It's a "rotating armature" design with a fixed field. (AC power comes from the rotor.) It's a CCK model, but many of the early Onans are rotating armature, including the venerable CCK and NH models. Probably the "rotating field" designs (AC from the stator), such as the NHD, NHE and BGM would work just as well.
I was pretty sure my Onan would have no trouble with the PD. The inverter gens can have trouble with switching converters as they don't see any load until the AC signal gets to the top of the peak, then they can have trouble producing the necessary voltage/current. My Onan has no fancy control electronics to get confused. There's not even a voltage regulator per se.
I love the old reliables that Onan built. :)
