In theory those wire gauges should be ok, but IMO you would be better off with #4. Certainly use #6 instead of the #8. It might be from connection losses that it seems to go better if you "over-do" the wire gauge.
I use deck- mounted converters close to the batteries and you do get a few more amps with fatter wire even at the short lengths involved
