PD4645 Battery Charging

I installed a PD4645 Converter/Charger.

There is a difference between when the unit is plugged in to home power at 121 volts and when the generator is producing the power.

When the generator is conected the charger goes in to Boost mode.

When the home power is connected the charger goes into Normal mode.

Each senerio was done with no charging for 4 days between each type of connection.

And the generator was run for one hour in the first senerio.

What other than pressing the button to force a certain charge senerio would cause the difference?

Voltage at charging at both senerios was 12.2

Thanks

Bob
  • If you remove shore power or gen power and disconnect the battery, wait about 10 seconds the PD will reset mode and will be in Boost 14.4vdc when AC is restored and the battery hooked back up.
That's the only way what you described can happen unless there is something wrong with the PD..

When you disconnect shore power the PD control electronics is kept alive by the battery, thus still alive.

  • Thanks for the replys.

    Kill-A-Watt meter says 121 Shore 122 Gen.

I'm not concerned at this point, It just seemed odd.

That is strange as their is no difference between shore power connection and generator connection if you are plugging your shore power cable directly into the generator 120VAC receptacle using a RV30A-15A long adapter.

consider this Electrical BLOCK DIAGRAM for typical 30AMP wiring.

I use both connections all the time here using myPD9260C converter/charger unit without any issues.

Hooray for the PD series converters where you can force them into any of the smart mode charging modes by just pushing a button...

Perhaps the shore power 120VAC actual level is alot different then generator 120VAC output level. i.e. one source might be reading 105VAC and the other one reading 125VAC etc... ??
