The adventure rv site is confused it seems. They list the PM3-100 at $10 less than boatand rv does,(no idea of shipping from each, which affects total price) but then show another "PM3-100" for way more, but give its specs as though it is a PM4.
Boatandrv PM3-100 says it is 1620w (correct) while the (wrong) PM spec for the PM4s is 1440w. (to be corrected AFAIK) also boatandrv says their PM3 has that equalization stage in Float which is the fourth "stage" that makes a PM3 into a PM4-confused yet? :(
PM4 has the added feature starting in boost no matter what the battery SOC is and runs for 15 minutes, then decides whether to stay in boost or drop to 13.6 depending on the battery SOC by then. Meanwhile the actual PM3s start like WFCOs, only doing boost if they see under 13.2v at kick off. (which means battery SOC usually just under 50%)
IMO if you want a PM4, deal with Randy and get the three-year warranty etc. If you want the PM3 to modify, get one but consider it risk money in case you mess it up once the lid is off and you start twiddling the pot. Also know the thermistor "issue" --avoid hot restarts and connect to battery before plugging in the charger.
My PM3-100 as modified works really well but the OP is right--I could have wrecked it.
