WindyNation recommends that the controller be as close to the batteries as possible but not in the same compartment if they are wet. And I'm a fan of using adequate wire sizes. I'm 10 to the combiner box from each panel (3) - seven feet max, 8 to the controller - eight feet, and 6 to the batteries - four feet.
