portable RV freezer?

because of a special diet it would be handy if we had another freezer in the RV. maybe a portable one.
any suggestions?
(apparantly a powered cooler won't do the job)
thanks all

if only we could go by the reputations of old good ones.
now everything is made in china... and we know what that usually means!

There is a company named Engel that makes a very nice high effiency line of refrigerators and freezers (Some are Refrigerators only, others it depends on how far you turn the knob).

Mine is 9 years old and still going strong.. Draws on the order of 35-40 watts running, less when not running. Only thing I have done to it is the occasional defrost and last winter I blew some dust out of it (not that it was complaining, but I felt the need)

Can run on 12 volts or 120 volts

I can sit on it (I am over 300 pounds) some models might be the wrong size for that.

Works very well in my opinion.

They describe the compressor as a "Sling Motor" it compets with the Danfoss units.

Norcold and Dometic also make competiting prouducts now (did not then) I really like this thing. Beats the BTU's off the solid state "Koolatron" type coolers.
  • We bought one for $70 about ten years ago. Gave it to my daughter and it is still working. She is on vacation so I cannot call her and get the brand. It came from either Walmart or Kmart.
Does yours have to run on gas or can it be just electricity? I should have thought of that before I told you about it.
  • Something you should consider is where you will be mounting this. Sometimes the expensive ones are not as expensive as constantly replacing the cheap ones. Some cannot handle excess heat or vibration. You might have to ventilate if placed in a basement compartment.
  • Last month we ordered an Edgestar 63 quart portable fridge/freezer. We have used it on one trip down through eastern Oregon, then over to Eugene. The fridge/freezer worked perfectly. It was 100 degrees in Prineville, and the cooler stayed at 38 degrees. It hold a lot of stuff as there is no need for ice. It runs on 110 volts, or 12 volts. We did run it down to 6 degrees below zero to test, no problems.

The bad news is that it's north of $500.00. We're retired, do a lot of traveling, and for us it's worth the investment. I would have bought this years ago if I had known how well they work.

There are several threads here on the forum that pertain to Edgestar if you search for that term. Maybe Edge Star too.
  • I got mine for $60. bucks at a auction plugged in and froze. look on e bay ceaigs list etc. there out there just siting in somebodies garage.
  • 12v freezer

or if you have the battery, inverter etc. you could go with a small 120v like these click

Either way you will need the hook ups or battery to run them.
  • thanks - we are not full timers.
i only find freezers with oh mi gosh prices!

  • we have a small one holds about four jugs of milk for a size comparison, works of 12V or 120v AND propane, it,ll freeze the jugs solid. daughter uses it for the dog shows. theres lots of them to look at on e bay. just type in portable freezer.
  • Are you a full time rv'er? What all do you plan to keep in there?

Im a full timer and like to keep plenty of frozen goods so i have a deep chest freezer. i put it in one of those out door plastic deals meant for lawn equipment or whatever. works great to keep it out of the weather.
