Portable Waste Holding Tanks

Our new RV has a rather small black water holding tank, only 9 gallons. I am contemplating buying a portable tank however am concerned about traveling with it from home to a campground as well as back. I have no concerns about moving it with waste from the camp site to the dump station nor back. But how does one travel with it when going back home. Even though its been thoroughly rinsed after dumping it, it will not be clean nor free of any oders. If you tow with a pickup, you could always put it in the box of the truck which at least would be away from passengers as well as the interior of the truck. But what about those who tow with a SUV. There is no separate box to haul something like a portable waste holding tank. Any suggestions.
  • I carry mine in the back of the pick-up. BUT .. it never has odors. First, when dumping it, it's always rinsed out. A couple times during the summer I will add a bit of bleach water and splash it around and then drain and rinse the bleach water. At campgrounds, after dumping, I rinse. When putting the caps back on, the tank is sealed. No odors. Even after sitting all winter, when I open the caps the first time, there's no odor. The secret is to rinse very will, then you can store them pretty much anywhere. (FYI, I've had this tote for about 15 years now. I replaced the wheels once. Still works like a champ. I've lost the little garden hose cap several times. I keep extras now.)

  • I had a little 5 gallon portable waste tank that would fit in one of the storage compartments in our trailer. I would rinse it out as best that I could along with all of the associated parts. Let everything dry in the open air and then store it 'til next use.

Actually there isn't a lot of residual smell once the tank dries on the inside. With the lid on, no smell.
  • I have a bracket that mounts to the rear ladder of my trailer. That and a large nylon strap holds in firmy in place
