You hit upon the exact reason why huge, heavy, seeming underpowered alternative energy batteries (and electric forklift batteries) last longer. The plate material is less spongy (denser). The thickness factor also helps.
Golf car batteries have denser cured plate paste. The paste in 2 volts cells is so expensive it is frightening.
Knowing 100.00% charged limits have to be done battery by battery and then things change as they age. This is one of the algorithms I played around with quite a bit because on the surface it was not resolvable in a parallel battery bank.
A hyper-resolution thermometer that defines (example 38.83 Celsius) in conjunction with a similar device that determines ambient temperatures, can be employed. The Delta T is the key. I just gave away one of my trade secrets that I have held close to my vest since technology allowed temperature definitions that precise. I used monel thermocouples. Results were bonafide conclusive.
