You hit upon the exact reason why huge, heavy, seeming underpowered alternative energy batteries (and electric forklift batteries) last longer. The plate material is less spongy (denser). The thickness factor also helps.
Golf car batteries have denser cured plate paste. The paste in 2 volts cells is so expensive it is frightening.
