A stripped thread does not make "cheap construction." It does, however, suggest poor assembly and a lack of Quality Control.
How someone can make that into a National Bash escapes me. Return it and replace it, if desired.
You would not be looking at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and others as a source of quality products if you relied on 1950s Japanese products which were nearly universally labeled as "(Insert racial invective) c**p" at the time.
My Chinese generator was just fine out of the box and continues to operate fine. I do not attribute that performance to the fact it was made in China - just that it was made well by someone.
