A stripped thread does not make "cheap construction." It does, however, suggest poor assembly and a lack of Quality Control.
How someone can make that into a National Bash escapes me. Return it and replace it, if desired.
You would not be looking at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and others as a source of quality products if you relied on 1950s Japanese products which were nearly universally labeled as "(Insert racial invective) c**p" at the time.
My Chinese generator was just fine out f the box and continues to operate fine. I do not attribute that performance to the fact it was made in China - just that it was made well by someone.
I not so fondly remember the mid 60's and the influx of Japanese automobiles, most notably Toyota and how they cars rusted on the showroom floor. Being a retired toolmaker, I also remember the first Japanese 'precision' tools (Mititoyo) to reach the United States. They were cheap and basically all junk compared to the American made L.S. Starrett and Brown & Sharpe. We laughed at them and now Mitotoyo has become the standard by which all precision tools are measured from.
It's all about progression from junk to quality and a 'learning curve' for any manufacturer.
The Chinese can turn out a quality product as well as junk. All about oversight in manufacturing and ongoing QC.
I know my Chinese Champ is well put together, I've looked and looked prior to purchase. Neat and tidy inside and outside and Champ uses Lifan motors. Lifan built and is maybe building motors for Yamaha and Honda in the not so distant past.... and now as well.
