If it was me, I would have removed the fuel petcock, took it apart, retapped the hole and replaced the screw. The petcock seals with an 'o' ring and the stamped metal outer cover provides the sealing force as well as the turning resistance. Easy fix actually. And if the unit runs well, why not repair it and continue on instead of returning it and then bashing it.
Just like and mechanical thing (your vehicle included), things fail or were assembled incorrectly and fail. I don't see it as a terminal issue, just a quick fix.
It would be an easy fix at home, but we were on the first day of a ten day hunting trip, high in the BC Coastal range, up to our knees in snow. I don't normally carry taps and dies and a selection of different sized fasteners on these trips. You can also buy replacement valves on line for under ten bucks -- hardly worth fixing the old one, which I'd never again trust. And as mentioned in another post, who knows what (if any...) damage was caused to the electronics by being awash in raw gas. I didn't want to take that chance, so back to Home Depot it went.
The failed genny, while it didn't ruin the trip, certainly took some of the pleasure away. It required us to run the truck for many hours to charge the camper battery. And of course, we couldn't use any of our 110AC equipment or appliances.
We're getting soft in our old age but pushing 70 means you're allowed to have some luxuries you didn't have when you were a young buck. ;)
