Power Inverter

I just installed an apartment type refrigerator and want to install a power inverter to run it while I am traveling. What I need to know is what size cables do I need to hook it up to my batteries. I will need about 12ft. of cable and the power inverter is 1500 watts. Thanks for any help, Dave

  • So, you are saying I should mount the power inverter near the batteries and run an extension cord from there ?

just my 5 cents, but try your hardest to get that 12ft down to 3-4 feet. use an extension cord on the AC side if you need more cable to reach the plug for the fridge.

the longer a low voltage DC cable is, the heavier gauge it should be, especially when talking inverters and compressor fridge, which have huge start-up current demands.

    The fridge draws 6 amps

6 amps at 120 Vac is AT LEAST 60 amps at 12 Vdc
  • Any ampacity chart will tell you what wire size then.. 6 x 10=60 for the 12v side. Yeah there's a surge but like a car the wire you choose for 60 amps should be fine. Go larger if you feel better doing that. Ain't gonna hurt nuthin'.

Oops.. I erred in talking about 120v amps.. sorry. It's 60 amps!!
  • The important number is the amp draw of the refer. That's what the cables are sized to. Someone else will know.. I do not.
