IMO some improvements are like power windows and power door locks. Are they necessary? No. Could you get along fine without them? Yes. Are they really, really handy? You betcha, and that's the clincher. Power steering, automatic transmission, microwaves, TV, DVD/VCR, air conditioning, indoor plumbing, central heating, etc. All are actually unnecessary, but are pretty easy to get used to having around.
