Well the regulator on our 5th wheel actually shows the status of both tanks based on the primary (tank the lever is pointing to). I keep both tanks open to take advantage of the auto change over feature, the regulator will start drawing from the secondary tank while the lever is still pointed to the primary, and my indicator then changes from all Green to Red/Green. This indicated that the Primary tank is empty, and now running on secondary tank.
At this point I move the lever to the secondary tank, making it primary, I then close the old Primary (empty)tank valve, and remove to have filled. Once filled and back on Trailer, I veerry slowly open its valve and it becomes the full secondary.
In the picture the primary tank is empty, and the secondary tanks is supplying propane.
