Propane tanks will not fill

There is a safety valve inside of the tank. quite often when the tank is empty/no pressure and the tank is knocked over, or tips over tha valve will move and block the gas from going in. All one has to do is take the tank and slam it down on the bottom collar a couple of times to reset the valve and then fill it.( A lesson learned from my propane guy

It is not free to do this they do charge a premium that is a lot more expensive than regular refilling.

I replace my bad valves myself. I fill my own tanks. I have been a certified propane installer. It's not rocket science, so most propane distribution centers should be able to fix the problem.

I can think of three things.. one already covered.

Another is the ACME fitting has a cut off vavle in it. if the fill line is not properly connected this valve (like a tire valve or the valve in a quick disconnect (Throwaway bottle) is closed.

Another is the Blue Rhino thing.. Blue Rhino, in order to make sure folks who bought into their exchange system, STAYED in their system, had an extra little feature in the valve that for quite some time meant only they could refill their tanks.. I understand they have discontinued that, but...

1: I do not have a B.R. tank to my name (Thus I am not sure) and
2: You may have an older tank with this feature and
3: I am also not sure they are the only ones that stupid.

Exchange it.

They get inspected, repaired, sand blasted, painted, filled and delivery nearby.

So they short you a few lbs of propane.

Compare this service to a standard refill that can be miles away!

Swap them out for new. You get a "certified" tank that has been inspected and filled. I ran into a tank a wile back (blue rino I think) that the propane company could not refill. He told me that some of the tanks had a special fitting that required a special filler to fill them, they were more then happy to swap out my tank, he had a stack of them sitting there.

They clearly welcome "obsolete cylinders that can't be refilled". The price is the same, obsolete or not. They emphasis that all old cylinders get recycled. I think they would welcome you bringing them in our of landfills.
