As many of you know I've been using the pro to start my air con for many years. Reason is the generators (2-2k honda on Eco) sag at startup causing the inverter to take over, then when air is running the inverter drops out and the gens run it. It is questionable as to whether this is a good idea for the Xfer switch, although Xantrex support did not specifically tell me to stop doing that. At this time I don't know what has failed in the unit.
Reason I mention it is that the oddest thing happened when I removed the Pro from the shore/gen circuit - the generators had no problem starting the air! That got me to thinking...of possible reasons it doesn't work when the inverter is hard-wired in the circuit:
1) The input voltage is sagging below the Pro's LowAc voltage limit. I could lower that to 85v (its lowest setting).
2) The Pro's pigtails are too small to pass the air's starup amp requirement. Those 120vac pigtails seem too small for a 2kw inverter. They look like 14 or 16awg. I had strange problems with the AC a few years ago and discovered that the Romex/pigtail junction (wire nuts) was burning up. I soldered the connections and it's been fine ever since. I know a lot of amps are going through there.
I have tried starting the air with the inverter off, so, I know having the Pro in the circuit is the reason the gens will not start it.
The Xantrex tech suggested I step up to the 3kw unit, but, that unit also has a 30a xfer switch. So I'm not sure what he means by that. I'll look more closely at the unit to see what the 120vac connections look like.
