Protection from Power Surges-Electrical and Storm?

My Class C motor home uses 30 amps. What is the best way to prevent any damage during a storm or electrical power surges? Which surge is worst? What damage can happen in a surge? What can I buy to pre...

get a multi function surge protector $250 and up. but as pianotuna sez, unplug during a lightning storm if you can.
