not a good analogy IMHO. my house has a constant/steady/uniform (more or less) supply of electricity. it was wired 30 some years ago and correct wiring has been assured since then. so for 90% of the reasons I use a multi-function surge protector the odds are miniscule that it will happen in my home.
I did consider getting one on one of my houses that the electric company wanted I believe $8.00 a month extra, but when I found out that that would not protect me from a jolt coming in thru the ground, decided that it was not worth it.
of course I have and use the standard assortment of un-interruptable power sources, surge protectors, etc. on computers, CPAP machines, etc.
