Almot, the Solar 30 or any controller with single stage but adjustable voltage for Vabs cannot know what the battery SOC is or anything about Float. It just stays at the set voltage (if the sun lets it).
It is your job to reduce to Float or not in that case. No need if it gets dark anyway. Just leave it as set, and it gets going again in the morning. Works with LFPs or any battery--you choose the Vabs per battery spec.
IMO you have got something going on with your set-up that is confusing, and no general lessons can be drawn from your experience with it until you find out what is going on with your set-up. I know you won't agree, but IMO you have "blind spot" about that for now. Can't help with that without being there, but maybe you know somebody who can put fresh eyes on it to clear that all up.
