I added hot rod 400 watt kit 2 years ago and love it. My water heater is located right underneath the dinette bench, and I always hated hearing the sound of the gas burner coming on and off throughout the day. With the separate thermostat on the electric element I keep it set about 20 degrees higher then the gas thermostat. Therefore in moderate use the gas never fires unless someone goes in the shower.
No negative things to report
This is how I set mine up also. I keep the gas on though for faster recovery when 4 people are showering in a row. My Atwood didn't have an anode, just a plastic drain plug.
