This is a strange story. One reason that this might happen is someone installed a custom tune which causes some dependency on something in battery backed up RAM. I've read about someone doing this deliberately in order to keep their truck from being stolen, similar to a kill switch, except that if the circuit went dead, the truck was inoperable until it got a new ECM tune.
