My old ASC controller said never have the controller run a load without the battery connected, so maybe that is the real issue for damaging a controller (or at least that particular controller)
You can easily have it wired so the controller runs the entire rig 12v system with the battery disconnected.
The other connecting sequence reason is to do with powering up the controller first so it can set itself for 12v or 24v battery before connecting the 12v or 24v array.
When you get your controllers by snail mail from Hong Kong taking three weeks, you either have to be very cautious, or have a spare on hand. I have managed to fry two cheapos so far, not clear on just how I did it either. It's ok to fry them at the $15 level, but when they cost hundred$ it would be a little different!
Read the manual carefully, allowing for the English as a second language, and hope for the best :(
