It's pretty easy to keep everything clean. Whenever mine sounds like it's really working I open the valve that let's fresh water into the pump. This blend of fresh water into the muck thins it out.
There is a garden hose port on it so as long as you have a water supply you can run water through it when you are done.
After emptying the black I shut the pump off and leave the black valve open then open the gray to flood the black tank to help rinse it. I can also open the fresh water valve on the pump in backflow the freshwater up into the black tank or the gray tank to flush them. It's a handy set up if you have ample fresh water supply. Not that it can't be done with just a gray flush.
I'm pumping slightly uphill through a 50 foot 3/4 inch heavy duty garden hose
It's not difficult to disassemble if needed I reach in and pull some hair out of it when done with needle-nose pliers.
