2 controllers on one bank would work, just not too elegant solution. The only scenario when it is necessary would be when there isn't enough space on the roof and you have to use a small ~120W portable with a separate controller in addition to a roof-mounted system. Many people would run a generator in this case, to augment a small roof system.
