Re: Use of Star Washers for Ground Connections

Hello; did an internet search but I am still confused. I am grounding two wires together to the frame of my Suburban using a bolt, washer, split ring washer and nut. Questions: Is this sufficient? Is the use of a star washer advisable? In what position on the assembly should the star washer be placed? How many star washers should be used (one for each wire?) What is the general role of the star washer for a ground connection? Thanks for your wisdom.

    If this is a high current ground, I would expose bare metal and use a star washer against the frame.

    For lower current, likely the threads are enough.

    Car audio websites have good info on creating low impedance grounds.

    Sounds good. You might also want to remove and paint or other coatings from the area under the washers. Even without doing so, you are unlikely to have an issue. The area where the bolt threads contact the frame should do it.
