real or hoax?

Back during the first oil crunch, someone came up with a machine that turned garbage into motor oil. I talked to a guy that I knew and he said he had seen it and the oil appeared to be good quality oil. I think the promoter was looking for investors. Roomers had it that a couple locals had invested in it.
Then on day I heard that it was discovered that hidden inside the machine was a can of motor oil.
